Day 1: Merthyr Mawr (Long)
Map Sample:
Large area of complex rough open dunes. There are pockets of woodland and areas of dense vegetation. The area features the “Big Dipper” which is the biggest in Wales and the second-largest in Europe, about 60m high!
Day 2: Cribarth (Middle)
Map Sample:
The terrain is an interesting mix of crags, broken limestone pavement, shake holes, and disused quarry-workings and tramways. It’s very runnable, thanks to the sheep, but there are plenty of steep climbs to slow you down!
Day 3: Carreg Goch (Long)
Map Samples:
Extensive hilly area of open limestone terrain. A bit of everything - shakeholes, boulder fields, crags, bare rock and some marshy areas. Boulders can be quite distinct on the plateaus. Runnability is generally very good but there are some stony sections to contend with.
Day 4: Pen Rhiw Wen (Long)
Map Sample:
The fast open terrain of Pen Rhiw Wen offers tricky slope orienteering with intricate contour detail from mining, mixed in with the usual sinkholes and limestone features.
Day 5: Llangynidr (Long)
Map Sample:
High and wild, limestone moorland plateau with no walls and few paths. The area is cut through by a deep Eastern facing valley. To the north there are small hills and lines of crags. Much of the land is grazed so faster running. To the south the land form is more subtle with many shakeholes and areas of exposed stones and heather.
Day 6: Merthyr Common (Middle)
Map Sample:
Open limestone moorland lying between 420 m and 620 m above sea level. There are numerous pits, depressions and sink holes as well as limestone pavements and other rock features. Runnability is good though there are areas of heather.
